The Gift of Light ~ One Solar Lantern ~ Afghanistan and Elsewhere
Gift of LightYour gift of light can change
someone's life. More than a third of the
world's people live without access to electricity. Generally, these are the poorest and least
educated people. During daylight hours, they are busy working. But when the sun goes down, it's too dark to
learn to read, to teach children, or to work on small practical projects that
can help earn money. One solar lantern can provide a school, clinic, or family
with a sustainable lighting source for at least ten years or longer.
Fifty Lanterns
International is a nonsectarian, nonprofit organization based in St. Paul. They were founded to help improve lives in
communities torn by poverty, war and disaster through gifts of solar-powered
lanterns and energy systems. Projects
benefit widows and families in Afghanistan, earthquake victims in northern Pakistan and Kashmir, and AIDS orphans and
widows in Rwanda. You can find out more at www.50lanterns.org.
